Yes, Scientific research supports the notion that yoga is an effective modality for stress and anxiety reduction. The popular practice involves deliberate attention to the breath, activating the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation. Studies have also shown that regular yoga sessions contribute to a significant decrease in cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress, and an increase in alpha and theta brain waves, which are beneficial for our immune system, mood, and relaxation.
Mindfulness techniques in yoga cultivate present-moment awareness. Being that we spend most of our time anxious (living in the past) or depressed (living in the future), yoga is essential for managing anxious or depressive thoughts. It helps promote a calmer, balanced mental state. Yoga brings us back into the now and gives us the tools to build a resilient mind set.
Frequency depends on your schedule and goals. 2-3 times a week is recommended but starting with 1 a week is still a good place to start. You can then slowly increase your sessions as you feel ready.
You should check with your health care professional before participating in a class with injuries. If you understand your injury and body and feel comfortable practising, you can practice if you feel safe. If you choose to practice, we highly recommend not over-exerting yourself and making modifications.
